Honoured colleagues, dear friends!

With pleasure I invite you to the XVII. AIFREF Congress that will take place in May 2017 in Prague. After many years of collaboration with the members of this international association and also years of mutual inspiration and enrichment, I too have the honour of personally partaking in the organization of this regular specialist gathering. The theme we have chosen concerns, as it is the tradition, child development. The congress named ‘Quality of life of the child today’ offers many topics for contemporary thought and I am looking forward to your presentations and also the collective informal discussion that will follow. A line of great experts have promised their participation and I believe that the event will also be a chance for members of the association to get to know more specialist work of colleagues from Central Europe. The congress will take place in the historic spaces of Charles University, only a few tens of metres from the Old Town Square and Prague astronomical clock.

Prague tends to be the most beautiful in spring, decorated by blooming gardens and parks. The International Prague Spring Festival will take place at the same time as the congress and it offers remarkable musical experiences in immemorial palaces and also concert halls with a unique atmosphere. The location of the congress is an opportunity for a rich social programme.

Looking forward to seeing you.
Prof. PhDr. Lenka Šulová, CSc., President of the Congress

We welcome the participants of the 17th International Congress of AIFREF

What joy it is to meet again in Prague to celebrate the AIFREF’s almost 30 year existence and organize its 17th congress!

Prague with her thousand years of – both famous and tragic – history is overflowing with beauty in many art spheres: architecture, literature, painting, music, sculpting. She can also boast about the fact that significant scientists like the astronomers Ticho Brahé and later Johannes Kepler came for a visit. More than 51 000 students study at Charles University that owes its name to the extraordinary ruler, the Czech king Karel IV, who established it in 1348 and secured its world reputation.

We could hardly find a more suitable place for the congress than in the city consecrated to art and the university with a prestigious scientific history.

Prague was always the place where multiple opinions were exchanged and information was shared. For example, the Vltava (in German Moldau) river divides the city into two parts and simultaneously connects them with 18 straight bridges. This congress is similar by having lecturers and attendees from twelve different countries actively participate. Oh how many “bridges” are possible to build and how many exchanges of opinions can be made through these various cultures!

The topic concerning the quality of a child’s life does not make us indifferent. We received roughly 125 abstracts for lectures, announcements and symposiums and posters. These will be separated into the following four section types:

  • Children at the heart of today's family networks: 29
  • Children and the evolution of educational institutions: 35
  • Children at risk: 30
  • Children in their cultural and environmental context: 31

The uniform presentation distribution into different sectional themes confirms the relevance of each one of them.

It is equally interesting to look closer into the content of research that attempt to understand “the life quality of the present-day child” as well as into the scope of the lectures that are concerned with enabling or improving this quality of life. From the content analysis of abstracts it is clear that there are 7 important categories (in declining order): cooperation between the school and family, in some cases between the school, family and society; parenthood support; the effect of the parents’ educating style/characteristics of the family; research focussing on the child; education of specialists; present day social problematic and the ways of child treatment.

It is necessary to emphasize two interesting findings: on one hand the balance between the number of abstracts from research areas and the number of abstracts from possibilities of instrumentality, most frequently subject to assessment; on the other hand, the meaning of the category “cooperation between the school, family and society” that by itself creates a fourth of all abstracts. This discovery suggests that the life quality of a child today stems from the idea that “education is everyone’s business”. Hence this is a substantial change in approach.

Do you wish to find out more about the quality of a child’s life? The aim of the AIFREFF congress in Prague, held at Charles University from the 18th to 20th of May 2017 is to fulfil the participants’ expectations. Members of the organizational and scientific board will happily accept them and bid them enjoyable and intensive experiences during the opinion exchanges and discussions. In other words, they hope that this event will also contribute to the life quality improvement of all the congress participants!

Looking forward to seeing you.
Prof. Jean-Pierre Pourtois, President of the AIFREF
